What Actually Happens at a Site Walkthrough?
You've approved the plans, the permits are in, and construction is underway. Then comes an email from your project lead: “We’re ready for your site walkthrough.”
So... what exactly is a site walkthrough?
Whether it’s your first custom build or your fifth, this phase can feel a little mysterious. At Homes by Westgate, we believe in full transparency — and that includes what happens when you walk your future home-in-progress.
Here’s what to expect, what to look for, and why it’s one of the most valuable parts of the entire process.

What Is a Site Walkthrough?
A site walkthrough is an on-site meeting with your project manager (and often your designer or architect) where you physically walk the build in its current stage. It’s a chance to preview the layout, confirm critical details, and ask questions in real time.
When Does It Happen?
There are typically multiple walkthroughs throughout the project, including:
- Framing Walkthrough — when walls, windows, and room divisions are in place
- Rough-In Walkthrough — before drywall, to review plumbing, electrical, and HVAC layout
- Finish Walkthrough — closer to completion, when surfaces and cabinetry are being installed
Each walkthrough has a specific purpose and checklist.
What You’ll See (and Why It Matters)
1. Layout Confirmation
You’ll walk room by room to make sure spaces feel right, proportions match your expectations, and no surprises are hiding in plain sight.
2. Lighting & Outlet Placement
We’ll point out where light switches, pot lights, and outlets are planned — and adjust if needed before walls close up.
3. Window & View Checks
Framing walkthroughs let you confirm how natural light enters the space and whether your views line up with what you imagined.
4. Storage & Built-In Planning
We’ll review built-in shelving, closets, or cabinetry areas to ensure there’s enough space — and that they’re in the right spots.
5. Problem-Solving in Real Time
Sometimes site conditions spark fresh ideas or require small adjustments. This is your chance to be part of the solution, not just the spectator.
Pro Tips for Clients
- Wear boots — the site is active, and safety is our priority.
- Bring questions — we love a prepared homeowner.
- Take photos — great for documenting and sharing your build journey.
- Trust your gut — if something feels off, this is the time to flag it.
Why We Love Walkthroughs
They’re real. They’re collaborative. And they often spark some of the best moments in the process — when clients light up seeing their home come to life. Ready for your walkthrough? We’ll bring the hard hats and walk it with you — every step of the way.
